Ⅰ.Language and Cultural Points:

1.You’ve probably already wondered what college will be like.

 what在其引导的名词从句中,可表示两种意义。在句中,它保留了原有的疑问意义,即“什么”。在句中,what表示“东西,事情”,相当于the thing which

 what引导的宾语从句。连接代词what除起连接作用外,也在从句中作介词宾语。                  

e.g. Do you know what that is?

e.g. The teacher asked us what water is composed of.

2.glimpse

— n. a quick look; a glance                  

Example:

 A glimpse of her face will tell you that she is innocent.  

看看她的脸你就知道她是无辜的。

Synonyms:

 gaze  glance   glare  stare   

glimpse

gaze — to look long and steadily

She turned to gaze admiringly at her husband. 她转过身并钦佩地凝视着她丈夫。

glance — to look at sth. quickly and briefly

e.g. He glanced around the conference room. 他扫视了一下会议室。

glare — to stare angrily, fiercely

e.g. They stopped arguing and glared at each other. 他们停止了争论,怒视对方。

stare — to look with fixed eyes

e.g. The old man stared at the uninvited guest up and down.

老人上下打量这位不速之客。

3.sort out

— arrange or order by classes or categories

Examples:

Sort out things you want to keep and throw everything else away.

把你想要保留的东西整理出来,不要的扔掉。

We must sort out the good apples from the bad ones.

我们必须把好苹果从烂苹果中挑出来。 

4.schedule

— n. an ordered list of times at which things are planned to occur

Examples:

These measures have been carried out according to schedule.

这些措施已按计划执行。

They have planned a tight schedule of travel. 他们的行程安排得很紧凑。

5.be different than

 different than & different from……不同

Example:

The campus is different than it was 20 years ago.

(The campus is different from how it was 20 years ago).

20年前相比,校园有了很大的改变。

Both of them are common in British and American English, but the phrase “different than” is more acceptably used, particularly in American usage, where the object of comparison is expressed by a full clause.

6.traditional

— a. consisting of or derived from tradition

Example:

The workers are trying to apply modern techniques to this traditional craft.

工人们正试着把新的现代技术运用到传统工艺中。

7.flexibility

— n. the property of being flexible, easily bent or shaped

Example:

We appreciate your flexibility in dealing with this matter.

我们欣赏你在处理这件事上表现出的灵活。

8.offer

— v. make available or accessible, provide or furnish

Example:

To do this they had to offer more flexible contracts.

为此,他们不得不提供更灵活的合同。

9.duration

— n. the period of time during which something continues

Example:

The duration of the movie is 110 minutes. 这部电影时长110分钟。

10.opportunity

— n. a possibility due to a favorable combination of circumstances

Examples:

You must grasp this opportunity. 你必须抓住这个机会。

I shall be glad to have an opportunity to see the city.

我很高兴有机会看看这个城市。

11.explore

— v. inquire into

Example:

Can you explore the market possibility for us?你可以为我们做个市场潜力调查吗?

— v. research, search

Example:

The experts are exploring every part of the island.专家在小岛各处勘查。

12.passion

— n. a strong feeling or emotion

Example:

He has a passion for photography. 他酷爱摄影。

13.specialize

— v. become more focused on an area of activity or field of study

Example:

This shop specializes in chocolates. 这家商店专卖巧克力。

14.curriculum

— n. the courses of study offered by an educational institution

班上大部分学生都积极参加课外活动。

Derivative:

extracurricular — outside the regular academic curriculum

e.g. Most of the students in the class took an active part in extracurricular activities.

Language Points:

freshman  sophomore  junior  senior

freshman — n. first-year undergraduate

sophomore n. second-year undergraduate

junior n. third-year undergraduate

senior n. fourth-year undergraduate 

15.be aware of

— having or showing knowledge or understanding or realization or perception

Examples:

The persons in the mountain were aware of the threat at that moment.

山上的人们那时意识到了威胁。

But there are important issues these students need to be aware of.

有些重要事项需要让学生知道。

16.option

— n. one of a number of things from which only one can be chosen; choice

Examples:

There weren’t many options open to him. 他并没有很多选择。

We have a 12-day option on the house.

我们有12天的选择权来决定是否购买这房子。

17.a morning person

— n. one who is awake very early in the morning, mostly before sunrise不易醒的人 /喜欢早起的人/夜猫子/睡觉容易醒的人

19.definite

— a. precise; explicit and clearly defined

Example:

She made no definite answer.她没有作确定的回答。

— a. known for certain

Example:

It’s definite that he will come to help us.他肯定会来帮助我们的。

Derivative:

definitely — in a definite manner; certainly; undoubtedly那肯定是正确的。

e.g. That is definitely correct.

20.straight

— a. successive (without a break)

Examples:

He was sick for five straight days. 他一连病了5天。

They have been working in this project for six straight months.

他们在这个项目上连续工作了6个月。

21.in that

— because, for the reason that

Example:

His request is unreasonable in that he knows we cannot afford it.

他的要求不合理,因为他明知我们付不起这笔钱。

22.get involved

— to be engaged in sth.; to be involved in sth./doing sth.; to participate in sth.

Example:

He has joined the club, but he has never got involved in the discussion.

他加入了俱乐部,但从未参加过讨论。

23.get crazy with

— be crazy / mad because you have too much to do or cannot handle as you wish

Example:

I got crazy with the connecting speed of the Internet. 网络的连接速度让我抓狂。

Example:

24.rehearsal

— n. a practice session in preparation for a public performance

Example:

The play is in rehearsal now.

— ad. in actual fact

Example:

She looks young, but she’s actually 50.

Paraphrase:

If you want to know what a college student’s life is like, you may get some useful information by taking a look at his or her schedule.

26.undergraduate

— n. a university student who has not yet received a bachelor’s or similar degree

Examples:

This is a course for undergraduates. 这是为本科生开的一门课。

He spent his undergraduate days in Columbia University, majoring in economics.

他在哥伦比亚大学度过了他四年的大学生活, 主修经济学。

27.University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Cultural note:

It is a public research-intensive university in the state of Illinois, the United States. It is the oldest, largest, and most prestigious campus in the University of Illinois system. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is the second oldest public university in the state, second to Illinois State University. It is considered a Public Ivy and is a long-standing member of the Big Ten Conference.

28.ignore

— v. give little or no attention to

— v. refuse to acknowledge

Examples:

Nobody could ignore these problems.

没人能无视这些问题。

I’ve warned them they could get seriously ill, but they both ignore my advice.

我警告过他们可能会得重病,但他俩都没理会我的忠告。

29.convince

— v. make (someone) agree, understand, or realize the truth or validity of sth.

Examples:

Most importantly, the US convinces us that it is willing again to keep the war away from the world.

最重要的是,美国让我们相信她愿意再次让世界远离战争。

We convinced grandma that the airplane is safe. 我们使奶奶相信乘飞机是安全的。
